How many detection zones does the IAS need? The IAS calculator

Count entrances, windows, corridors and rooms per security area and pick the VdS grade as the project setting — the calculator derives magnetic contacts and motion detectors, forms detection zones per area and device type, and shows how many zones and expansion modules the intruder-alarm control panel needs. Notes on the sizing
  • Zones are formed per security area and device type (max. 8 devices per zone) so that a triggered zone stays locally identifiable (DIN VDE 0833-3 / EN 50131).
  • VdS 2311 (7.4.2, classes B/C): a reporting area spans at most one storey and up to 5 adjacent rooms with a combined area of ≤ 400 m² – room layout is not checked here; take it into account when assigning detectors to zones.
Open points for the specialist planner

Measures from tables 1–8 of DIN VDE 0833-3 that no calculator can derive from counts — they explicitly belong to the specialist planning (listed in German, the canonical language of the standard extracts). Klassen A/B/C und Grade 1–4 sind laut VdS 2311 (4.1.2) nicht bzw. nur bedingt vergleichbar – die Grad-Zuordnung ist eine grobe Orientierung, kein Nachweis.

  • Offen (Grad 2, Tabelle 2): Verschlussüberwachung der Zugänge – nicht Teil der Automatik, Riegel-/Verschlusskontakte von Hand ergänzen.
  • Offen (Grad 2, Tabelle 2): Auf Öffnen überwachte Fenster zusätzlich auf Verschluss überwachen oder mechanische Zwangsläufigkeit vorsehen (z. B. Aufdruckbolzen) – von Hand festlegen.
  • Offen (Grad 3, Tabellen 3/4): Bei Außenhautüberwachung sind Zugänge/Fenster/Öffnungen zusätzlich auf Durchstieg und Leichtbau-Flächen auf Durchstieg zu überwachen – die Automatik setzt nur Magnetkontakte (Öffnen); Glasbruch-/Körperschallmelder aus dem Katalog von Hand ergänzen.
  • Offen (Grad 3, Tabellen 3/4 mit 7/8): Wertbehältnis-Überwachung (Durchgriff, Zusatzmaßnahmen für Wertschutzschränke/-räume) – nicht Teil der Automatik, von Hand planen.
Simplifications of the quick check
  • One magnetic contact per opening — valid up to a 1.3 m door leaf or 1.6 m window sash; wider openings need one contact per leaf (derived from the opening width in the planner).
  • One motion detector per room — valid up to about 12 m range; large or angled rooms need more (derived from the room geometry in the planner).
  • Other detectors (glass-break, vibration, hold-up buttons) are not included — they are added from the catalogue in the planner.
Standards-oriented sizing aid based on the selected grade — a planning proposal for review by a qualified planner, not a verification and no statement of conformity. The grade itself comes from the security concept and the insurer's requirements; verification remains with the installer and the expert. The calculation runs locally in the browser; no data is transmitted.

Grade → scope of surveillance

Home/A · B · C → contacts + PIR

The selected grade decides what is monitored: Home and class A protect the building envelope (magnetic contacts on entrances and windows) and the forced routes as trap protection; class B adds motion detectors in all rooms; class C also monitors internal openings. This is exactly the graduation the planner applies for the project setting “IAS per VdS, grade …”.

Detection zones per area

Detection zones are formed per security area and device type — contacts and motion detectors are never mixed and never span areas — so that a triggered zone stays locally identifiable. The device count per zone is a planning default you adapt to the manufacturer.

Questions about IAS sizing

How many detection zones does an intruder-alarm system need?

Enough for a triggered zone to stay locally identifiable: a separate zone per security area (usually one storey) and per device type, limited to a practical number of devices per zone. The calculator forms the zones exactly like that and compares them with the zones of the control panel — if they do not suffice, it names the required expansion modules.

Which grade is right for my building?

That follows from risk, security concept and the insurer's requirements — not from the technology. The grade is an input to the planning; it determines the minimum scope of surveillance measures. The calculator takes it as a project setting and shows the mapping to grades 1–4 of DIN VDE 0833-3 only as orientation, because according to VdS 2311 classes and grades are not directly comparable.

Why one contact per opening and one detector per room?

Because the calculator knows no geometry. In the planner, magnetic contacts per leaf follow from the opening width and motion detectors from room shape and range — the quick check uses one default per opening and room instead and states that openly as a simplification. For wide gates, multi-leaf windows and large halls the number in the planner is therefore higher.

What does the calculator not compute?

Locking, penetration, reach-through and safe surveillance as well as glass-break, vibration or hold-up detectors — measures that cannot be derived from counts. They appear as named open points per grade so that they visibly land in the specialist planning instead of silently missing.

Does the calculator replace specialist planning?

No. The result is a sizing aid oriented on DIN VDE 0833-3 based on the selected grade — a planning proposal for review by a qualified planner. Security concept, coordination with insurer and installer and the verification remain with the specialist planning; the IAS module in PlanWerke is also marked as beta.
